Tommy Connell

I am a Hill Country parent (John ‘23 and Betsy ‘26) and have been coaching the Hill Country tennis teams since 2022, spending two years with the Middle School team and now starting my third year as the High School coach. Growing up, I was ranked in Texas as a junior tennis player, played varsity tennis at Katy Taylor High School outside of Houston, and spent college summers coaching tennis at T Bar M Sports Camp in New Braunfels. I come from a tennis family: my father is a USPTA teaching pro, and he and my mother still teach tennis in Bellville. My siblings also played college tennis, and my brother is currently the head women’s tennis coach at Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. I continue to get coaching support and advice from them.

Tennis is a fantastic opportunity to apply life skills: mental toughness, persevering amidst adversity, managing conflict with maturity, and playing/living for the glory of God even when you’re losing. It is one of the few sports where you stand eye-to-eye with your opponent and fight to win with dignity, respect, and good sportsmanship. The sport not only prepares you for adulthood but it is also one of the few sports you can play until you’re 95. I love it and I hope your students will play and love it, too!

“Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Phil 3:12-14
