Philip Hudgens
I joined the Hill Country staff in 2000. I have coached several sports at the school over the last 25 years. The first golf team Hill Country competed with was in the 2005-2006 school year. I started coaching the golf team in the 2007-2008 school year up through the present year. Over the years it has been my experience that when the players are relaxed and enjoying themselves, they play better golf. As their coach I spend most of my energy with them trying to help them stay in a good headspace so we talk about all kinds of things to help them achieve that. I spend far less time attempting to fix their grip, stance, swing etc. although from time to time I give them some things to consider in those areas as well. Over the years we have had some very talented players and in some years more than a couple, which has allowed us to do well as a team a few times. As our school has grown we have become more competitive, and I believe we will continue in that direction considering the popularity boom with the sport, during covid, in 2020. It’s been fun to watch the different teams come through over the years and see the shifts go back and forth from the girls being more competitive than the boys, vice versa, and some years both groups being very competitive. One of the things I really enjoy is seeing players improve over the season and in some cases over multiple seasons. There are some good life lessons as well for them along the way. With golf you have to work at it on a regular basis. We were made with the use it or lose it principle in mind and it certainly applies to golf. You also have to have a short memory when it comes to golf, otherwise a bad shot or even a hole can snowball into an avalanche of poor play in a hurry, “forgetting what is behind and straining to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal” Philippians 3. Some of my favorite scripture is found in Philippians 2:1-11 which talks about unity, relationships and attitude. These proper perspectives and attitudes are essential for a joy filled life, and certainly any sport.
